Fire Erupts in Kovan, Leading to Mass Evacuations

In a recent incident in Kovan, Singapore, a fire broke out at a two-storey residence, necessitating the swift evacuation of 30 individuals. Occurring on September 5 around 3 PM, the blaze sent thick smoke into the air and caused partial damage to a neighboring property.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded promptly. Utilizing three water jets, firefighters worked diligently to contain and extinguish the flames. Fortunately, a resident managed to exit the house before SCDF’s arrival. Despite their efforts, one person was assessed for smoke inhalation and subsequently transported to Singapore General Hospital for further evaluation.

The firefighting effort was not without its challenges. One firefighter sustained an ankle injury during operations but did not require hospitalization. Meanwhile, precautionary measures saw nearby residents evacuated as a safety protocol against potential hazards from the fire.

Witness accounts describe dramatic scenes as smoke billowed from the affected property. Vincent Lim, 74, who chairs a local temple just down the street from where the incident occurred, reported seeing the fire shortly after it began. He quickly alerted emergency services before rushing over to assist an elderly couple residing at the affected address.

As firefighters continued their work into the late afternoon, dampening measures were implemented to prevent any possibility of rekindling. The investigation regarding what ignited this fire is currently underway.

Community Response and Support

This incident in Kovan highlights not only the dangers associated with residential fires but also showcases community resilience and support during emergencies. Local residents rallied together as they witnessed their neighbors in distress, emphasizing a shared responsibility towards safety.

Previous Fire Incidents

Kovan has seen its share of fire incidents; earlier this year, six people were rescued from another blaze within a condominium unit in close proximity. That event resulted in injuries for several individuals due to burns and smoke exposure.

Residential Fire Statistics

According to annual reports by SCDF, there has been an uptick in residential fires nationwide. In recent years, statistics indicated an increase from 1,990 cases in 2024 to 2,050 cases in 2025—a concerning trend that emphasizes vigilance regarding home safety practices.

The leading causes of these fires have consistently included unattended cooking and electrical mishaps—issues often stemming from faulty wiring or overloaded outlets. It serves as a reminder for homeowners to remain proactive about fire safety measures within their residences.
